About Department

Established in 1963, as a hub of Classical dance (Kathak) education, the Dance Department of Maharani Laxmi Bai Girls PG College, a premier government institution in Madhya Pradesh, has long been a beacon for aspiring performers and scholars. With a firm foundation in Kathak and a progressive outlook towards folk and modern expression, the department has nurtured generations of artists committed to the rich cultural heritage of the region and the nation.

The Master’s program in Dance was inaugurated in 1989, marking a significant milestone in the academic and artistic journey of the department. Since then, it has evolved into a distinguished postgraduate program that emphasizes both rigorous practical training and in-depth theoretical study. Students are mentored by experienced faculty members, many of whom are acclaimed performers and researchers in their fields. Currently headed by Dr. Suchitra Harmalkar, department is committed to fostering creativity, discipline, and scholarly excellence, providing a vibrant space where tradition meets innovation. Through performances, workshops, seminars, and research, it continues to play a pivotal role in the cultural landscape of Madhya Pradesh and beyond.
